Beginner's Course in Jewelry Making
Get an introduction to the subject in 6 lessons
Would you like to find out if jewelry making is right for you without committing to a whole season of classes right away? The introductory jewelry-making course at Poelie is designed as a concise introduction: in 6 sessions of 2.5 hours each, you’ll learn the most important basic techniques and go home with at least one piece of jewelry you’ve made yourself.
This course is especially suitable for those who want to work with metal for the first time and get a taste of the craft before committing to the comprehensive 12-lesson course. You’ll work in the same professional studio in the heart of The Hague, under the guidance of the same experienced goldsmith, but with a program tailored to a shorter time frame.
Introductory Course in Jewelry Making with Personal Guidance
- Starts Tuesday, May 11, 2027, 7:15–9:45 p.m.
- Starts Thursday, May 13, 2027, 7:15–9:45 p.m.
What will you learn in 6 lessons?
In the introductory course, you'll go through the entire process from design to finished piece of jewelry, but with a more condensed curriculum than in the full course:
- Lesson 1-2: Designing and Cutting — Your First Metal Shape
- Lessons 3–4: Filing and Soldering — Making Connections and Finishing the Shape
- Lesson 5: Setting a Gemstone (Basic Technique)
- Lesson 6: Polishing and the Final Touch-ups
After these 6 lessons you'll master the basics: sawing, filing, soldering and polishing. For deeper insight into more advanced techniques such as more intricate settings, forging or working on multiple pieces of jewelry at the same time, there's the 12-lesson goldsmithing course.
Poelie trained at the Schoonhoven Vocational School and shares the knowledge and techniques she acquired there during the course.
Who is the introductory course for?
- You've never worked with metal before and want to see if you like it first
- You're short on time and would like a condensed course of 6 lessons instead of 12
- You're considering the full course, but want to take a smaller step first
- You're looking for a fun, hands-on alternative to a one-time workshop — something with just a little more depth
Proceed to the full course
Many students who take the basic course then choose to enroll in the 12-lesson course to further develop their skills and create more complex designs. At the end of the basic course, Poelie will be happy to discuss with you whether moving on to the next level aligns with your goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the basic course and the jewelry-making course?
The introductory course consists of 6 lessons and is designed to introduce students to the basic techniques. The full course consists of 12 lessons and offers more time for in-depth study, more complex designs, and more advanced techniques, such as more elaborate settings.
Are 6 lessons enough to finish a piece of jewelry?
Yes, most students create at least one complete, finished piece of jewelry, such as a ring or a pendant, in 6 classes.
After completing the basic course, can I move on to the full course?
Absolutely. Many students deliberately start with the introductory course to get a taste of the subject and then move on to the 12-lesson course.
If I move on to the next level after completing the basic course, do I have to start over at Lesson 1?
No, we use the basic techniques you've learned as a starting point; throughout the entire course, you'll build on them.
Are the material costs included?
The course price and material costs are separate. You only pay for the material you actually use.
Beginners can purchase a starter kit, which includes: sanding sticks - silicone finishing cones - 1mm metal drill bit - hard & medium solder and saw blades.
